California Trip: Days 5 & 6

July 1, 2009

Father’s Day began with a pancake and omelette breakfast with our friends before heading off to church.

breakfast

In the afternoon we met up with my sister and brother-in-law at his parent’s home for a Father’s Day barbecue.

They live right around the corner from where my parents lived for many years.

We went swimming, ate lots of yummy food, played croquet, and enjoyed some beautiful California sun.

Thanks Doug and Nancy!

Erik lost a tooth in the pool while he was swimming.

Amazingly my brother-in-law was able to find it and fish it out of the water so the tooth fairy could collect it when we came home.

We headed to San Francisco to spend time with my sister and her family for the next couple of days and explore the city.

On our way we stopped by the cemetary to put fresh flowers on my dad’s grave and pay tribute to him on Father’s Day.

Ralf lead us in a family prayer and we talked about how we all miss Grandpa.

It was peaceful and sweet.

cemertary

Never having lived in the heart of a large city, we all enjoyed visiting Ashley, Nick, and Hudson.

They live in an old warehouse building a block from the water.

We walked around their neighborhood with their two King Charles Spaniels.

The two older kids stayed with them during our 2 days in the city while we took the two little ones with us to stay at the Westin.

I must say there was a huge difference between the this hotel and our experience in Reno.

What’s a big city without a museum, right?

So the next day we visited the recently renovated California Academy of Sciences.

We saw a planetarium show, an albino alligator, a fantastic aquarium, a living rooftop, and a myriad of inspiring ideas on saving the environment.

The cafeteria offered new things to try like steamed pork buns, scones, and bread pudding.  Yum!

Can you guess who thought Darth Vader would be able to save the planet?

Since Ralf had the car at a business meeting, my sister was at a doctor appointment, and we were transportation-less, we called a cab to take us to to Fisherman’s Wharf.

I didn’t give out much information to the nice lady driving the big yellow van.  Being the “hick girl” that I’ve become, I figured as soon as she sensed we might be from Idaho she’d take us the LONG route through the city.

You can’t be too trusting of these city cab drivers, or so I’ve heard.  :)

We ate clam chowder in sourdough bread bowls, watched the sea lions on Pier 39, and did a little people watching before Ralf met up with us and we took a drive down to the beach at Chrissy Field.

Whew!  One more post to go.  Maybe I’ll get to it tonight.

Happy Wednesday!

Holy Cow , did I have fun this weekend!

Baby Hudson is adorable!

I loved getting a taste of living in the Big City.

Visiting old friends was fantastic!

Venturing off the tourist path and into the heart of inner China Town was eye opening!  Who knew you could buy live frogs at the meat market?

Mother’s Day brunch at Ashley’s in-laws was relaxing and wonderful.

The weather couldn’t have been more beautiful.

Despite all that, I was happy to come home to my family.

They were equally excited for me to come home so they could show me their surprise(s):

I seem to recall something about being on the fence?  I guess we toppled off it finally.  Surprise.  Surprise.

Happy Belated Monday!

I'm Hitting the Bar…

March 3, 2009

I’m in an exercise rut.

Well, not exactly a rut.

I can’t motivate myself to get out of bed at 4:45 every morning and drive 20 minutes on the cold dark lonely streets to get to the gym.  And it has nothing to do with this class I suffered through a while back.

I need a change.

So this weekend while visiting my cute, hip, urbanite of a little sister, she shared with me the hottest exercise trend in San Francisco.

bar-method1

Have you heard of this?

It’s a mix of ballet, pilates, and strength training.  The classes are wildly popular and people swear by them.

She told me I should check and see if anyone offers classes near me.

Near me?  Are you kidding?  My closest gym isn’t even near me.  I knew there was no chance.  But I Googled it anyway.

The closest class to me is either in Redmond, Washington or San Francisco.

But…

Guess what?!!

For those of us who are not a stone’s throw away from a major (or minor) metro area, we can order these:

method1

So I whipped my exhausted credit card number out of my wallet brain and ordered right then and there.

Will it make my rear look like this?

rear

Will it give me long lean arms like this?

arm

Will I be this bendy?

stretch

Most likely not.

But, at least I won’t feel the guilt when I switch that beastly alarm clock off at 4:44 and attempt to get my coveted 8 hours of sleep.

I’ll let you know how it goes…

A Weekend Away…

March 2, 2009

… is good for the soul Mom.

I had a great time with my sisters and my mom this weekend in San Francisco.  We celebrated Ashley’s first baby with a shower thrown by her husband Nick’s family.

Nancy gave Ashley a bag of Nick’s baby clothes she had saved for him.  In it were these darling cowboy boots and his baby booties.

Thanks Ashley and Nick, for another taste of city life. Can’t wait to meet Baby Hudson!!!

How to Recharge a Mom…

November 11, 2008
  1. Take one tired, stuck-in-a-rut mom of four and fly her “home” to California.

dsc_03482. Send along her mom and sisters to meet her for a long weekend.

dsc_0350dsc_0351dsc_0352

3. Take her sight-seeing,

dsc_0328

dsc_0345

dsc_03463. Shopping at her sister’s stores and eating. As a bonus, splurge on a wonderful chocolate mousse mineral facial.

dsc_0334dsc_03361
dsc_03534. Give her time to finish reading her book.

61hg6mv0yxl_sl500_aa240_5. Have her spend a little time at her sister and brother-in-law’s condo in South Beach to visit with their spaniels (who don’t realize they will soon be welcoming a new baby in March).

dsc_0354dsc_03626. Then send her back home revived, refreshed and ready to take on these little people.

dsc_0174Hope you all had a great weekend too!
