May Article

May 14, 2009

A Great Big Thanks to everyone who visited me yesterday for my big SITS Day in the sun!

I am overwhelmed that my little blog received over 1,600 hits yesterday and hundred of comments.  I’m working on sending everyone a proper thank you for your visit.  I so appreciate it!

The May edition of our small town newspaper came out today.  And nope, it’s still not online.  And because I want a copy of my monthly articles, I am sticking them on this here blog.

This month’s article is custom written for the good folks who live in our little town.  But if you happen to be from a small farming community,  you’re sure to appreciate the humor.   For security purposes, I’ve changed the name of our town and some of the points of interest.  But if you’re from here, you’ll know exactly what I’m talking about.

Enjoy!

I must apologize.  I missed the deadline to submit my April article.  I don’t usually miss that type of thing.  All right,  I do sometimes.  But I had a really good excuse.  I upgraded my cell phone and signed up for unlimited texting!

As usual, I’m a little behind on this cell phone stuff.  My old phone was consistently on the verge of battery death, stuffed somewhere in the bowels of my purse.  On the rare occasion that it did get charged, I had a chorus line of messages from telemarketers waiting to be “deleted“, “saved in the archives” or “replayed“.  My friends knew better than to leave a message on my cell phone and definitely knew there was no chance that I was familiar with texting.  I was a virtual cellular technology dinosaur.

But as my circle of friends has grown here in Cowpoke, I’m finding that more and more of them are “Texters”.  So when my husband suggested that maybe I’d like to get a phone I could text with, I caved.

I spent the last couple of weeks engaged in Texting Proficiency 101.  I figured out how to space between words, capitalize letters, and backspace.  But I found that it takes up so much time writing out all my sentences with correct spelling,  proper grammar and punctuation.  My daughter would watch me fumbling around on my miniature keyboard with distain in her eyes.

“Geez, Mom.  Why don’t you use abbreviations?  It’s so much faster!”

My knowledge of abbreviations was limited to the universal LOL (Laughing Out Loud) and ROFL(Rolling On Floor Laughing).  So, as I do with all things unfamiliar, I Googled “texting abbreviations”.  A whole new world opened up to me!    I made myself a little cheat sheet on a sticky note and stuck it on the back of my phone.  I can’t say that it’s any faster for me to un-stick the paper, look up the abbreviation and type it out than it is for me to write out the entire word, but it’s pretty fun.

Included in my list are these fine and useful abbreviations:

G2G          Got to Go
JK          Just Kidding
MTFBWY      May the Force Be With You (trust me, in a house full of Star Wars             fans, it comes in handy)
PLZ          Please
L8R         Later
SRY         Sorry
THNX      Thanks
PUKS         Pick Up Kids
KROS      Kid Reading over Shoulder
IBL          I’ll Be Late
ADL          Article Deadline Looming (Just a little reminder to myself)

As I was thinking about the efficiency of texting abbreviations, I had a thought.  Wouldn’t it be nice if we had a universal list of abbreviations specifically for our community here in Cowpoke?  I present  you with my list of Cowpoke Texting Abbreviations:

GV!              Go Vikes!
CTSBST          Can’t Text Stuck Behind Slow Tractor (Please never text while driving. Have your teenage passenger do it for you)
CLSAR         Case Lot Sale at Ridley’s
ABBDTFFBS      At Burger Boy Drive Thru For Fresh Banana Shake
LLIBY          Livestock Loose in Back Yard
CUAHSC          See You at Hunter Safety Class
MBBDCSPFD      Must Be Burn Day Can’t See Past Front Door
4HMAS          4-H Meeting After School
WBHISSB          Wind Blowing Hard I Smell Sugar Beets
JBHCFN          Just Bought Half a Cow From Neighbor

Feel free to write them down on your own sticky note and share them with your  “Texting” friends here in town.  And if you come  up with some of your own, email them to me  and I’ll share them in next month’s article.  And PLZ keep them clean, because I may have KROS.  L8R!

Friends, Fifth-wheels, and Unagi

January 18, 2009

Yeah!  Our good friends from California meandered their way past the farmsteads and pastures to visit us this weekend.  We gave them a tour of our “quaint” town and talked, and talked, and talked.  It was wonderful.  We hope the ruralness  didn’t  scare them too much and that they’ll come back again.

What does a date night consist of when you live where we do?  Sometimes we trek out to the big grocery store and stock up for the week.  Anti-climatic, I know.  But practical.  Sometimes we do the typical dinner and a movie.  No matter where you live, I think a cinema can be found, even around here.  And sometimes we pick up chinese  food and watch the latest Netflix movie.

This weekend we decided to forego the norm and do something more befitting our locale.

We hit the local RV Show!

me-drivingralf-rvfireplace

We saw pop-up campers, swanky cruise buses, tear drop campers, toy haulers, fifth wheels, luxury travel trailers, and even some tent trailer hybrids.  There were deals to be made and cheesy salesmen to make them.  But in the end we decided we could stay in some pretty nice hotels many times over for the price we’d have to pay to sleep in the same spot we’d spent all day traveling in.

So we left the world of RVing behind, hopped in our Tahoe and went out for sushi.

What-in-the-Heck Wednesday … The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly

December 24, 2008

(I’m posting this a day early since I have a feeling tomorrow may be a nuthouse)

OK, first the good.

Have I mentioned that Idaho is a unique place to live?  Living out in the country affords many opportunities not available in the confines of a city.  For instance, it snowed here in Idaho.  A lot.  And it’s been cold.  Very cold.  We accumulated enough snow to reconsider getting a second 4-wheel drive.  Yet, I have not seen hide nor hair of a snowplow anywhere but on the highway.  That leaves our neighborhood the perfect setting for doing things like this:

Uh Oh.  Someone got left behind.

The Bad:

Is it just me or does it seem like every year there’s  someone sick at Christmas time?  Well, this year it’s Will’s turn to be feverish, drippy, crabby, and miserable.  He’s been that way since Saturday and we’re hoping by tomorrow he’ll be much improved.  Keep your fingers crossed!

I’m just gonna throw this next one in with the bad because I think it’s just about time that these two blonds get a haircut.

And the Ugly:

Know what happens when the kids are all out of school and you spend the day playing in the snow and baking the Christmas Eve desserts?  Your house experiences neglect and in turn, revolts in the form of dirty laundry piles, sinks full of dishes, floors just pleading for a vacuum and rooms in want of a cleaning lady.  Lest you think my house always looks photo-ready, here’s a little glimpse of what we’ll be workin’ on before the big day arrives.

Happy Wednesday, thanks for stopping by and have a Wenderful Christmas!

Memory Monday

wedding-1909

Ralf’s parents were here this weekend for a pre Christmas celebration.  Charlotte and I went through the bag of old photos collected from Ralf’s grandmother in Vienna.  Holy Toldeo, there are a lot of fascinating stories to be told!

I affectionately refer to these people as “the boat people”  because they look to me like they’re getting ready to board the Titanic.  This is actually a 1909 wedding photo.  Here’s the story behind it:

This has to be a wedding photo of my grand-aunt Mitzi. She was one of seven children raised in a very small town near Vienna. The family was not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, and all the daughters had to go into service with well-to-do families in Vienna. She was the prettiest of all of them, and found a rather rich, though much older husband, who, in turn, ended up helping out all the other sisters when they came to seek their luck in the big city. At least, that’s the saga I heard growing up. The husband died rather soon, leaving Mitzi with a sizable pension. Her only daughter married a lawyer and lived a comfortable life also.

Next week I’ll post a picture of some of those siblings as children.  We figured out that the picture is from about 1895.  It’s the oldest picture in the bunch.

Winter came to Idaho this weekend in the form some lazy flakes dusting the landscape.  I guess we live in the “banana belt” of the state and it snows very little.  So the kids were thrilled with what little snow we did manage to collect.

The kids had a Christmas piano concert at my fellow blogger/friend/piano teacher’s house.  Every one did a great job.  Will only had to be taken out once.  And there were even brownies afterwards.  Always a bonus.

Christmas isn’t complete without gingerbread house decorating, right?  We spent most of Saturday creating these “masterpieces”.

What-in-the-Heck Wednesday

November 19, 2008

So I don’t have any crazy, off-the-wall, rural, farm land, cows “multiplying and replenishing the earth” type pictures or stories today.

I do have a question to ask though.

Isn’t there a law against collecting rubbish from around your property, setting fire to it, and burning the dickens out of it for like two days straight?

Is this legal?  Because if it is, I may have to start a petition or something against it.  I know none of my neighbors in California ever burned more than their finger on the grill of their poolside grill/bar/entertainment center.  Heck, isn’t it illegal to even smoke within 50 feet of the state itself now?  Someone help me out with this.  I’m sure the smoke from the smoldering manure/leaf/cornstalk piles, or whatever they are, can’t be good for your lungs  or the aroma of your clothes, hair, house.

Maybe it’s just me.  Is it just me?  Help me understand.  Lorena?  Someone?

On another note.  Every year the PTA puts on a contest for kids all over the nation to showcase their talents in the arts.  It’s called Reflections. I love the arts. I’ve always thought it sounded like fun.  But none of my kids ever wanted to do it.  Until this year.  Erik wanted to submit something.  (OK, I was able to talk Erik into submitting something).  He loves art too.  The theme this year was “Wow”.

I love this kid.  (Does that sound familiar?)  He is a kind-hearted, sweet, gentle soul.  After sketching a couple of ideas, he decided he would watercolor a picture of something that made him feel “Wow”.  That thing was a rainbow with clouds arching over a field of flowers.  And he did a great job.

We went to the awards ceremony last night.  His division, K-2nd grade, had the most entries in the category of visual arts.  Being the realistic mom that I am, I was prepping him.

“Don’t be disappointed if you get a participant certificate.”

“Not all kids can place.”

“We’re just proud of you for particiapting.”

“Whatever happens, we love you”  , etc…

Guess who won first place???

An award, a picture in our small town gazette, and the best part… a $10 gift card to Target!

Me, being the frazzled single parent this week that I am, forgot the camera so I shot this when we got home. I don’t have a picture of his painting because it’s being sent on to regionals, but I’ll post it when it returns.

Have a great Wednesday!
