Art Display Project | Joyce Smith

January 1, 2012

I am so excited to kick off this project with the amazingly talented and oh so generous Joyce Smith of Joyce Smith Photography.  It takes a brave and organized soul to be the first guest blogger.  Thank you, Joyce!

I  believe in the importance of seeing images you LOVE–the ones that really make your heart sing–on the walls of your home. So many people are concerned that they will seem narcissistic if they hang images of their family, to which I say, why hang botanical illustrations and not those you love? I don’t understand the quandary there at all. LOL! Still others are worried that they will chose “the wrong ones” to enlarge. Just go with your heart . . . the images that jump out at you first are usually the right ones.

One of my favorite images ever!  : )  This is a 24×36 canvas mounted on masonite and framed in our eat-in kitchen.  It features Meredith around age 3 playing at her kitchen.  It looks much lovelier in person than this sad photo in the no-natural-light kitchen indicates.  LOL

This is the small entryway to our home–front door is seen here.  It’s a 10×20 standout of Meredith playing on the swings outside.  I love finding the perfect size for even small spaces and like to show these examples to clients who feel they simply don’t have enough wall space.

Formal dining room with a 20×30 gallery-wrapped canvas.  This is my favorite size for the walls.

Upstairs in our master bedroom is another example of a small print in a small space.  The image behind Buttercup the dog in the upper right is an 11×14, framed with no mat.  As you can see, the space is only about 20 inches wide or so.  It can be viewed closely as one passes through the bedroom into the bathroom on the left.  I always remind clients to think of two things when deciding on size–the size of the wall where the image will be, and where YOU will be when viewing it.  The rest of our master is still a work in progress with many mounted prints and canvases left unhung.  A cautionary tale–don’t let this happen to you!  : )

Downstairs again in our small hallway.  This is a 16×24 gallery-wrapped canvas and it makes me smile every time I see it!!  It also makes me laugh to see such an angelic pose when the dog is barking like crazy at night. : )

Another 16×24 canvas in our dining room corner, over a secretary.  The dog barked at this canvas of her nemesis for three days after I hung it. True story.

One more doggy canvas.  This is a 20×30 in the kitchen next to the pantry and over the garbage and recycling cans.  Why not?  Who doesn’t need something to make them smile while doing the most mundane of tasks? This used to be at my studio before I’d had many dog clients, so it moved home eventually.

Thanks, Joyce!

Come back tomorrow for more display inspiration!

joyce! your home is beautiful and your art is perfect! I love how thoughtfully you selected and hung each piece. I especially love how you have so many of your beloved pets. I know if my mom sees these, she will ask me to replace all the images of her grandchildren with images of her dogs. ;)
thanks for sharing this wonderful inspiration, wendy! xoxo
