What to Wear Wednesday

September 30, 2009

As I’ve been filling up the calendar with sessions for October, I’ve had a few people ask about what they should wear.  My recommendations are pretty simple:

  • Comfort
  • Casual
  • Please, NO matchy-matchy, ‘lets-all-wear-the-same-white-sweater-and-blue-jeans’ outfits

It’s pretty simple to pull together coordinating clothes for the whole family that don’t match exactly but that go together well.

To help you out and give you some ideas, I’ve decided to post some suggestions on the blog every Wednesday.

Untitled-2I’ve still got some slots open in October and November for my free fall sessions.  Email me if you are interested.  I’d love to take your portraits!!!

I was almost going to bow out of this week’s challenge because I couldn’t think of any photos I had with a ‘blue’ theme.

Then I came across this one of my 3rd child that I took at last month’s Cub Scout pack meeting.  He was helping with the flag ceremony for the first time.

He was taking his job quite seriously. As he should.

To see more ‘blue’ photos, head on over to iheartfaces where the fabulous Sheye Rosemeyer is guest judging this week.  I LOVE her photography!  I’m hoping to get into one of her workshops soon and I am almost ready to take the plunge and invest in her actions.  They are gorgeous.

Don’t forget about my free portfolio building sessions next month.  My calendar is filling up so if you want to book a date, email me at w_vonsosen@yahoo.com.

Happy Monday!

I am excited to announce that I am now accepting bookings for my free portfolio building sessions!  I am looking to expand my portfolio of families, newborns, seniors, and children.

I am waiving my sessions fees during the month of October as well as including two 5×7s of an image of your choice.  In exchange for a free session, I am asking you to sign a model release allowing me to include your images in my advertising, marketing, and on my website.

This offer is good for all sessions booked during the month of October.

If interested, please email me at w_vonsosen@yahoo.com

This one just happens to be home with me all the time.

Today we scouted out some local parks looking for possible portrait locations.

FacesFixIt

Quite a challenge this week!

This little guy was extremely underexposed.  This happens to me all the time, especially when I forget to check my settings when moving from outside to indoors. Color fixing is tough when something is this underexposed.  But I did my best.

Here are my plays:

boy-collage

In CS4 I opened a curves adjustment layer.  I touched the white eye dropper tool on the white stripe on his t-shirt.  And the black eye dropped sampled his eyeball.

Then I sampled 4 spots on his skin and did some color adjustments in curves until he read and looked better.

Tweaked colors in color balance adjustment level

Adjusted contrast with curves

Filtered for noise reduction until it looked smoother

‘Color’ edit I used MZ XP colorful action

‘B&W’ edit I used The Secret Actions Black and White complex and pretty

‘Flare’ edit I used two different flare textures from Patti Brown’s Kaleidoscope collection

That’s it!

Have a fantastic weekend!

iheartfaces: completely candid

September 22, 2009

This week’s theme is “completely candid”.  As I’m editing the photos from this past weekend, I ran across this one.

This cute little boy was having the best time hanging out on the sidewalk while a crowd of aspiring photogs snapped up his photo.

That is UNTIL an ambulance came whizzing by with full sirens blaring.  It took him a few moments to process.  As soon as the truck was gone, he melted.  Poor little guy.

But, just as most little boys do, he bounced right back into happy playful mode momentarily.

Secret Workshop Dallas

September 21, 2009

I went.

By myself!

Wow!

That was so much fun……

I was a sponge.

I learned a ton.

I am inspired.

I have lists and lists of things to do.

And tons of pictures to edit.

Here’s a sneak peek at a few of  the photos I took at the workshop.  Aren’t these kids gorgeous?!

I took close to 400 photos that day.  Now the sorting begins.  Ooooh, I’m so excited to practice what I learned!!!

FacesFixIt

Today’s photo comes from the animator’s wife.  I’ve never known the animator’s wife to produce a single photo that needs fixing, this one included.  But it was fun to play around with anyway.

Here’s the original:

My workflow (in CS4) went a little something like this:

Levels adjustment to brighten it

Curves color adjustment for skin

Brighten teeth and eyes with soft white brush on 15%

Sharpen the eyes with sharpen filter then masked for just the eyes

burned and dodged her hair and the background a little

added my favorite texture MCP’s Sweet Light on hard light at 50% opacity

Added some fun sun flare brushes

Sharperned the mask

Sharpened for web

Flipped vertically just for fun

I don’t like the B & W  nearly as much.  She has such beautiful coloring that gets lost in the B &W.  But I wanted to practice my black and white conversion so I did.

I’m washing, packing, and cleaning furiously so I can hop on the plane to Dallas this afternoon to attend this!

All by myself!

I’m so nervous!!! And excited!!!

Have a wonderful weekend!

When we were just married and planning a family, my husband and I had visions of Saturdays spent at the ball field watching our little ones running after the ball, passing, shooting, and scoring goals.

Now, 14 years later, our first 3 kids have, at one time or another, played soccer.

And each one of them, in turn, discovered each individual blade of grass, or butterfly fluttering by, or interesting cloud formation, to be much more fascinating than the game of soccer.

This year it’s Will’s turn.

We had high hopes for him, being our last kid and all.  We were prepared for a little 5 year-old aggression.  Maybe a little fire!

Last Saturday was his first ‘official’ game.

Guess what I caught him doing between plays…

This sweet face just needed a few tweaks to brighten and sharpen.  I added some sun flare just for fun and because it’s my newest favorite brush.  :)

My work flow (if I can remember correctly):

Duplicate original

Levels adjustment

Hue/Saturation adjustment masking for eye color

smoothed the skin a little

Overlay of  MCP Sweet Life texture

Added sun flare brush to top right corner

Burned left edges

Sharpened for web

My Play:

I just got CS4 and have been diligently learning how to use it.  My accomplishment yesterday was learning how to mask.  I LOVE it!  It makes PPing so much quicker and easier.

Go check out the other edits here.

Happy Friday!

i heart faces: back to school

September 8, 2009

I think I’m getting in just in the nick of time this week.

School is well under way by now.

The kids are in 4 different schools this year.

I have 2 days a week when I have 4 whole hours, in a row, to myself.  Yay!

Life is good.

Happy Tuesday!

So I’ve been thinking about remodeling the blog for a little while now.  My old wordpress.com blog wouldn’t let me change fonts or load big photos and I felt a little confined.  So I thought I’d just upgrade to a wordpress.org blog and upload a new template … quickly, y’know?  I’ve switched templates before.  How hard could it be?

That was Friday morning.  By Friday night I had pulled out almost all my hair (or at least I wanted to), had more live chats with highly technical computer geeks than anyone should have to in one day, and had absolutely nothing to show for it except a blog that looked nothing like my own.   I realized I had  NO HTML CSS skillz whatsoever.  FTP was something I had never heard of before.

It’s now Monday afternoon. FTP and I know each other intimately.  The blog is finally dressed appropriately if not fully accessorized.  It can at least go out in public now.  Fortunately we encountered only one casualty during the switch.  July and August 2009 are missing somewhere out in the far reaches of the internet.  I’ve been told by one of those geeky internet geniuses that I can find them again if I venture back into my FTP.  I’m not sure if I’m ready for that again.  We’re taking a little time off from one another at the moment.  If you see them back here, you’ll know we’ve reconciled.

I hope your weekend consisted of more than wrestling with computer jargon whilst your household disintegrates into chaos. (Like mine)

Happy Labor Day!

Nothing to see here…

Move along.

My blog is in the serious depths of an identity crisis of which I, alone, can’t fix.  So I’ve recruited someone far more knowledgeable in this kind of stuff than I and we’re in the process of reinventing the blog.

Come back a little later for a look.

No rubber-necking now.

Move along, move along…
