(I’m posting this a day early since I have a feeling tomorrow may be a nuthouse)
OK, first the good.

Have I mentioned that Idaho is a unique place to live? Living out in the country affords many opportunities not available in the confines of a city. For instance, it snowed here in Idaho. A lot. And it’s been cold. Very cold. We accumulated enough snow to reconsider getting a second 4-wheel drive. Yet, I have not seen hide nor hair of a snowplow anywhere but on the highway. That leaves our neighborhood the perfect setting for doing things like this:

Uh Oh. Someone got left behind.

The Bad:
Is it just me or does it seem like every year there’s someone sick at Christmas time? Well, this year it’s Will’s turn to be feverish, drippy, crabby, and miserable. He’s been that way since Saturday and we’re hoping by tomorrow he’ll be much improved. Keep your fingers crossed!

I’m just gonna throw this next one in with the bad because I think it’s just about time that these two blonds get a haircut.

And the Ugly:
Know what happens when the kids are all out of school and you spend the day playing in the snow and baking the Christmas Eve desserts? Your house experiences neglect and in turn, revolts in the form of dirty laundry piles, sinks full of dishes, floors just pleading for a vacuum and rooms in want of a cleaning lady. Lest you think my house always looks photo-ready, here’s a little glimpse of what we’ll be workin’ on before the big day arrives.

Just keepin’ it real.
Happy Wednesday, thanks for stopping by and have a Wenderful Christmas!

Charlotte and I figured that this is the oldest picture in the stack, dating back to about 1895. Just to give you a little perspective, here are a few things that happened in 1895:
While all that was going on, in a tiny town near Vienna, these scrappy looking kids posed for this photo. Here’s the story:
The five children are my grandmother and her siblings around 1895 in front of their house in a tiny village south of Vienna, Austria. From left to right are: Ferdinand, who later emigrated to Milwaukee, USA; Karola, the oldest girl, who never married, although I was told she had an unhappy love affair in her youth; Emil was the oldest, and he joined the military and became a lieutnant as far as I know; he got married, and his daughter married an American soldier after WWII and moved to Los Angeles; next is Marie (or Mitzi), who married a rich older banker who died soon and left her all his money; and, finally, Josefine, my grandmother, the practical one. Two other siblings, Laura and Paula, were born after the picture was taken.
So, it turns out that the Mitzi in this picture is the very same Mitzi in last week’s post. Remember her? The one in the wedding photo (the one preparing to board the Titanic – not really but doesn’t she looked like she could’ve been?) with the gigantic hat on. Turns out she was able to snag the richest guy around, help out her siblings, and live out a comfortable life with her only daughter.
Happy Memory Monday!
We are loving all the snow that blew in over the weekend and are so happy to be done with school for two whole weeks! Just one more trip to Target and WinCo and Santa will be welcome with open arms! How about you. Are ready???

I’ve never been so thankful for HEAT than I have this week. I knew Idaho was cold, but Holy Toledo! I didn’t realize just how frigid it is here! I drove to Costco yesterday afternoon for my monthly trip to pick up a case of toilet paper and a bag of uncooked tortillas. Two hours and $250 later! , as I was driving home, my car said it was a mere 14 degrees out. I decided my sweatshirt and down vest would no longer cut it. Sigh. I’m gonna have to break out my winter coat. But at least I have heat. So this week I am thankful for heat, in all its forms.

There’s always something to offer guests to drink with their Christmas cookies. I used it today when I had my friends Mindy, and Jennifer and their little boys over to decorate gingerbread men. If you don’t have one, consider it. I’m pretty sure Costco carries them. And if not, Costco has many, many other intriguing and unnecessary products to wreak havoc on your budget. Trust me!

Since, according to the weather channel, Idaho isn’t the only place shivering right now, tell me… what is your favorite form of heat this week???
Happy Thankful Thursday!
Oh, and I was totally kidding about Night Rider in the last post. I’m not a talking car enthusiast nor do I consider Hasselhoff a heart throb. Just for the record.

I’m just about finished with my Christmas shopping. There are always those few last minute purchases that must be made to even up the score, so to speak, so nobody feels gipped in the end. I’m a procrastinator by nature so it would feel wrong if I were completely finished already.
I’ve been scouring the internet in search of just the right gifts for everyone. And I do remember that I promised you, my 6 faithful readers, that I’d share my fantastic finds with you as I went.
I haven’t forgotten!
For instance, here’s a great find:

The entire series of “Night Rider” in one amazing collection! I’ll even throw in a customer review, quoted word for word, from Amazon.
This was one of the best shows of the 80’s if not the best and while I have all four on DVD I am going to get this set because it is what it is. The show was about a man and his talking car K.I.T.T. While talking cars are getting closer to reality with GPS and things their will never be another show like this. I want to take a minute and say that the New Knight Rider is AWSOME and people just need to give it a chance it will hit it’s stride. You know this isn’t the only set coming out in a big set on the 21st of October. The Incredible Hulk is coming out the exact same way. So next week let’s all reve up and help Knight Rider.
Because it is what it is. Doesn’t that just say it all? AWSOME! What more could you want? OK, besides the entire collection of “The Incredible Hulk”.
But I digress. I really have been spending too much time online lately. And I have found a few blog-worthy gems in my search. I haven’t shared these with you for one reason.
I’ve become sidetracked.
I’m sorry. Has that ever happened to you? A click here. A click there. The next thing you know you find yourself enthralled in some stranger’s life through their blog.
In my gift-seeking mission, I have come across some fantastic blogs. Funny, sincere, inspiring, sweet, sarcastic and amazing blogs.
One of these bloggers is Anna Lefler at Life Just Keeps Getting Weirder. I discovered her a few weeks ago and added her to my blog roll. Her hilarious post about avoiding her dental hygienist hooked me. And then she came up with a list of bogging acronyms that are too good not to include in my Treasure Tuesday post this week.
Fellow bloggers, I triple-dog-dare you to tell me these are not completely 100% right on the money:
TBBGIIMC – This Better Be Good – I’m Ignoring My Children
ISSBFMFTC – I Smell Smoke But First Must Finish This Comment
BE – Banner Envy
PWCEBB – Proceed With Caution: Extremely Bitter Blogger
JHTMF – Just Here To Mooch Followers
SICS – Seizure-Inducing Color Scheme
ECIZ – Extreme Crafts Intimidation Zone
UMO – Unwarranted Music Onslaught
CPA – Comment Performance Anxiety
INTGTTBFFH – I’ve Needed To Go To The Bathroom For Four Hours
If you don’t ‘get’ these, well, you haven’t been blogging long enough.
Go check out her AWSOME blog! And let me know if you’ve got any of your acronyms to add.
Happy Tuesday…

Ralf’s parents were here this weekend for a pre Christmas celebration. Charlotte and I went through the bag of old photos collected from Ralf’s grandmother in Vienna. Holy Toldeo, there are a lot of fascinating stories to be told!
I affectionately refer to these people as “the boat people” because they look to me like they’re getting ready to board the Titanic. This is actually a 1909 wedding photo. Here’s the story behind it:
This has to be a wedding photo of my grand-aunt Mitzi. She was one of seven children raised in a very small town near Vienna. The family was not wealthy by any stretch of the imagination, and all the daughters had to go into service with well-to-do families in Vienna. She was the prettiest of all of them, and found a rather rich, though much older husband, who, in turn, ended up helping out all the other sisters when they came to seek their luck in the big city. At least, that’s the saga I heard growing up. The husband died rather soon, leaving Mitzi with a sizable pension. Her only daughter married a lawyer and lived a comfortable life also.
Next week I’ll post a picture of some of those siblings as children. We figured out that the picture is from about 1895. It’s the oldest picture in the bunch.
Winter came to Idaho this weekend in the form some lazy flakes dusting the landscape. I guess we live in the “banana belt” of the state and it snows very little. So the kids were thrilled with what little snow we did manage to collect.

The kids had a Christmas piano concert at my fellow blogger/friend/piano teacher’s house. Every one did a great job. Will only had to be taken out once. And there were even brownies afterwards. Always a bonus.

Christmas isn’t complete without gingerbread house decorating, right? We spent most of Saturday creating these “masterpieces”.

Notice my exquisite licorice Darth Vader guarding the front door.

I’ve been so bored lately. There seems to be nothing to do at this time of the year. Nowhere to go, nothing to make, nobody to visit, nothing to buy. You know how it is. Bored…bored…BORED!
So, as I was sitting around twiddling my thumbs, I decided to google my name. Into my google search I plugged,
“Wendy wants”
Here’s what I came up with:
Happy Friday!
Either I’m getting desensitized to life in the sticks, or nothing “what-in-the-hecky” has happened here lately. I’d like to think it’s the latter.
So, instead I borrowed an idea from Christie. I spent most of the morning digging through boxes of exceptionally disorganized scrapbook paraphernalia looking for Christmas cards of the past. When I resurfaced I had in hand 9 of the 13 years we’ve been married. Pretty good considering how disorganized I am. So, here’s a quick Christmas stroll through memory lane.
I know we started sending pictures after kids but I can’t seem to find any cards from 1995 through 1998. So we’re starting in 1999 when we lived in Danville, California. We had 2 kids and were living in our third house by that time. Ralf had jumped ship at Enron in time to join Siebel in it’s heyday. Does he look tired and stressed? Well, he was. This was also between Jack’s second and third heart surgeries. His lips were still blue and would remain that way for another year.

This next one is 2001, 9 months after we had Erik. Some people think since it takes 9 months to put the weight on, it should take 9 months to take it off. Well, they’re.so.wrong. At least for me. It took me at least 2 years before I felt normal again. Maybe that’s why all the kids are three years apart. Anyway, I’m not a big fan of sending fat pictures of myself so that’s why there are no parents in this picture.

Moving on to 2002. We still lived in California but thought a snow picture would be Christmasy so this was taken in Little Cottonwood Canyon while visiting my sister in Utah. It’s a few months after Jack’s final surgery. See how pink he looks now? And so happy. We had much to be thankful for that year.

2003 has me perplexed. I found 2 pictures and I could have sworn we sent them both out as Christmas pictures, but I’m sure NOT at the same time. So I’ll include them both.
The first was taken on one of our trips to Disneyland. Boy do we miss being a half day’s drive away!

This second picture must have been taken right after our first digital camera. Check out all the “magic” I created with my fancy editing options! Notice the festive ornaments hanging in mid-air. And I must have been pregnant since we are, again, missing in this picture.

2004 found us still in Danville but in our 4th house. Will was born 10 weeks early. He looks tiny here but he was actually 4 months old by then.

2005 brought lots of changes. My dad passed away that year and we started thinking about slowing life down a notch or two. Ralf was tired of his hour+ commute and we felt we needed a change.

Our change came when we decided to leave our life in California and give Utah a try. And try we did… for a couple of years anyway.

I could not find a good picture of all of us together in 2007 so I opted for an artsy picture I took of the kids at a beach in Newport News, Virginia on our Williamsburg trip. It was on my blog for the longest time. If you didn’t get to see it, you’re out of luck. With the whole “cleaning out the computer memory” thing, it exists no longer.
Which brings us to 2008. We were in need of a new family portrait this year and since we are now in Idaho, what better backdrop than a barn? The photographer was great. She spent lots of time with us. In fact, two Saturdays were spent trying to get a good group shot. But, like the saying goes, “if Momma ain’t happy, ain’t nobody happy”. “If Momma looks fat, Momma ain’t sending out a family picture.” The kids all looked great and they all made the cut. And my very photogenic husband even looked great. So, I compromised and included a tiny picture of us all looking completely enraptured at Ralf summarizing Star Wars:Return of the Jedi. That’s the one at the top of my blog.
Maybe next year will see us all on the family Christmas card again. We’ll see.
And maybe next week I’ll be back with a dang swell “What-in-the-heck” moment to share.
Happy Wednesday!

I chose this picture for today’s Memory Monday post because I think it shows what kind of “salt of the earth” people my husband comes from. There are so many facinating stories of post war life in Austria that I’ve heard from his family. One day I’d love to get them all down on paper to pass along to future generations. From Charlotte:
This is Herta in her backyard with her parents around 1930. Times were very tough back then, but when Herta’s parents got a hold of an opportunity in 1924 to build their own house, they did not hesitate. Having very little money during that time of inflation and unemployment in Austria, they were able to build the house with their own hands for little money. Neighbors helped each other out, and when all was done, they prided themselves with growing their own fruit and vegetables, some even had their own chickens, goats, or cows right there in the outskirts of the city. Standing there in their backyard they represented a proud generation who dared to build their own future out of the ruins of WWI and the fallen monarchy.
We’re excited to celebrate an early Christmas with Charlotte and Bernd when they come visit this weekend. I’ll post some pictures so you can “meet” my wonderful in-laws.
Happy Memory Monday!

Once there was a stay-at-home mom who used to accomplish all her household tasks with a pen, some paper, a telephone, and her trusty automobile. Then one day her husband finally convinced her they needed a computer. That her tasks could be accomplished more efficiently if they hooked up to this thing called “the World Wide Web”. He used terms such as “internet shopping”, “emailing”, and “uploading”. She reluctantly gave in and her life changed overnight.
Out the window went pushy cars salesmen, phone trees, travel agents, and waiting for pictures to come back from the pharmacy’s photo center. Once there was even a little green van that would pull up to her door every week loaded with fresh groceries. And with those groceries, thanks to recipe websites, she no longer had to rely on Aunt Bea’s tatertot casserole to feed her brood. The computer became a lifeline. She began uploading, emailing, downloading, scanning, zipping, decoding, editing, filing, formatting, and attaching. She could even save all her Christmas addresses in a file at the ready. What had she done before this incredible discovery?!
Of course, little did she know that her computer had something called a memory. And that memory was quickly filling up. As time went on, that trusty computer of hers became a little lazy. Instead of uploading a picture in the zippy way it used to, it seemed to contemplate that task. Perhaps it had better things to do. Instead of working for hours on end, sometimes it would take an untimely vacation in the middle of creating an invitation or a sacrament talk. Some days it felt a little shy and wouldn’t show it’s face at all.
She mourned a little, then her mourning turned to annoyance, and her patience with it waned. She was far too busy and there was far too much to do to waste anymore time. Out they went to buy a shiny new, more efficient, bigger-brained computer. When they got home, that trusty old computer was relegated to the shabby desk in the spare bedroom where it gathered dust and was only turned on when that Mom needed to transfer an old picture or when she needed to revise a past talk to reuse in a new ward. The only time it was used on a regular basis was every December when she printed out her faithful Christmas address list.
Then, one chilly November day, her husband suggested they take that trusy old computer to her brother-in-law (who happens to know all there is to know about computers). Perhaps he could give it a good memory cleaning and they could ressurrect it for the kids to use again.
“OK. Whatever. Sounds good. Just save the picture files. There’s nothing else I need on there anymore.” she said.
So while the family filled up on turkey and green bean casserole, that old computer visited the rehab resort and finally received a thorough memory cleaning and a good dusting. At home it was placed in the workroom where it was quickly adopted by the boys and efficiently began playing Zoo Tycoon with gusto!
That same day, to that Mom’s joy, she found their Christmas card order waiting on the front porch. Eager to get the cards out because nobody had their new address and they wanted to receive cards this year, she set about addressing the envelopes. Up to the trusty old computer to print out the address list she went, just as she did every year.

WHERE was the list? WHERE was that list that had been added to every year? WHERE was Aunt Gladys’ address at the new nursing home? WHERE were the addresses of their friends who were unlisted because they were; in law enforcement, or played NFL football, or were just plain paranoid? How was she ever going to find her friend who’d been married so many times? What was her last name now? HELP!
SHE HAD FORGOTTEN TO SAVE THE CHRISTMAS ADDRESS LIST!
So, the following week was spent googling, searching, phoning, Facebooking, and emailing in search of lost addresses. In the meantime she had neglected her 4 year-old who had watched all the Christmas specials on the DVR at least 3 times, her laundry-strewn, dust-encased house, her 4 times a week gym attendance had dwindled to once that week, and even her church job.
What?!? The December newsletter needs to be done by today???
But, as many good stories do, this one also has a happy ending. She found all the addresses she could think of, wrote the obligatory family Christmas letter, signed each with a personal note, addressed and stuffed the envelopes, and found time to blog (necessity, no?). She saw the error in her hastly ways and realized she took her trusty old computer for granted. She now dusts it regularly and doesn’t allow anyone to overload it with unnecessary uploads, downloads, or silly tasks. It will live out the rest of it’s life fulfilling the boys’ Tycooning and Pokemoning needs safely and comfortably in a sunny corner of the workroom.
Now, if I haven’t contacted you for your address, I’ve either found it online or have forgotten you altogether. Email me if you’re not sure and would like to receive a card again this year.

Happy Fact or Fiction Friday.
Good luck with your own cards this year.
And give your old computers a little love…
Question: WHAT IN THE HECK! would convince me to allow this guy to take my 7 year-old son out of school in the middle of the day, to another town, in a pimped up Lincoln with tinted windows for an hour WITHOUT ME???

Really good question!!!
The reward for the top two sellers in each grade who sold the most cookie dough and cheesecakes for the school’s annual fund-raiser was a trip to Arctic Circle in a limousine. Erik was one of them.
And this guy (believe it or not) was the driver (and I can only assume the owner) of Rod’s Limos.
I just about wet my pants when “Rod” showed up to escort these little darlings to Arctic Circle! Not because I’m anywhere near a fan of Mr. Stewart. No. I’ve never wanted his body nor have I ever found him sexy. I’m sorry to any of you that have. If you’re not the real thing but look this close to it, there’s got to be something wrong.
I was SO relieved when I found out the Kindergarten teacher would also be coming along to chaperone.
They were SO excited! Aren’t they cute? (I promise he left the house with combed hair this morning.)
And they were off…
BYE!!!
Please come back soon…
(Should I be worried?)
Over the River and Through the sagebrush,
To Grandmother’s house we drive;
The Dad knows the plan,
to carry the fam,
So we can make it to Utah alive.
Over the river and through the sagebrush,
The cousins, aunts, uncles say “Hi”;
We all play Rock Band,
Quelf, Playstation and Candyland, (not really but it rhymes)
Then eat turkey and trimmings and pie.
Over the river and through the sagebrush,
The weekend wouldn’t be complete;
Without another viewing of Twilight,
Swooning over Edward late at night,
Getting our men to go proved an impossible feat.
Over the river and through the sagebrush,
Lots of fun was had by all;
To IKEA we ate lunch,
Chairs and beds we sampled a bunch,
The employees wished we’d go back to the mall.
Over the river and through the sagebrush,
We finally came home last night;
To laundry and school,
Say the kids, “This is not cool”,
But we’ll endure till Christmas Eve night…
